Peter Gibson Smith graduated from the Elam School of Fine Arts in 1984. Since then he has had over 30 solo exhibitions at public and dealer galleries throughout New Zealand. He has been the recipient of many grants and awards including: The Frances Hodgkins Fellowship in 1993 and The Wallace Art Award in 2001. His work is in many public collections and appears in numerous books on New Zealand painting.

His current work combines ‘Old World’ traditional art materials with ‘New World’ digital techniques to explore relationships between past and future, information and knowledge, technology and culture, ideas and art. His last major exhibition was: ‘The New World’ at Bath Street Gallery, Parnell in 2008.

His teaching experience includes the Elam School of Fine Arts from 1994 to 2005, initially as a technical instructor in painting and then as a lecturer. He has also taught numerous one-off workshops across most age groups.
