Vinyl cutters are used in the sign industry to cut text and graphics but with a little know how, artists can do much more with these machines than make signs. In today’s art world, many artists use vinyl cutter/plotters to make artwork. This course shows you how it’s done by teaching you how to use a vinyl cutter to create your own drawings, stencils and vinyl artwork etc… The aim is to show participants a range of approaches that they can incorporate into their own practice. This course will be especially useful to artists who are thinking of using a vinyl cutter but want more information and hands-on experience first.

Course Details

The basic techniques are taught first, followed by more complex examples then finishing off with an artist specific project.

Session 1: Introduction

Participants are introduced to the vinyl cutting process by cutting then applying text and simple geometric shapes.

Session 2: Getting Information from Images

How to manipulate images in Photoshop and Illustrator to make them suitable for vinyl cutting. Tips and tricks for getting the most out of your images.

Session 3 & 4: Individual Project

Using the skills learnt in the first 2 sessions, participants move on to their own project. It could be a vinyl artwork, a series of plotter drawings, a painting using vinyl stencils or any other approach that suits the individual. The tutor will be on hand to advise and assist throughout the project.

Materials

Basic materials are provided for the duration of the course and each student has an allocation of vinyl and application tape. If a student’s individual project exceeds that allocation, they would need to supply the extra materials.
